Master the Art of Conversation

Conversation is an extraordinary topic, and I am lucky enough to find myself helping people initiate and maintain conversations with people they have never met, for example at interview, in the workplace and also socially.

From birth we have been taught to speak with short words and sounds like “mum, mum, mum” to eventually building an enormous vocabulary helped by reading books (especially well-written books, rich with words) and, obviously talking with other people.

It is quite natural to converse with others, we are social animals, and it is normal that we wish to reach out to others to build relationships at home but also to communicate with people in our progress through school, university and work.

Small Talk

Small talk is often thought of as uninteresting and lacking depth, but this notion is far from the truth because small talk is the best starting point for serious discussions between individuals. It helps us find common interests and establish a, hopefully, positive relationship with the person or people we are talking with. Learning the significance of small talk and how to manage this initial stage of conversation is an art in itself.

From Topics to Dialogues

Finding the right topics to start talking about can be one of the most common challenges that people have. It can lead to “awkward” silences and potentially create an unfriendly atmosphere. In the UK we often initiate conversations by commenting on the weather, which is such a cliché and should be avoided if at all possible.

Having an arsenal of conversational techniques is especially helpful if you want to know how to begin conversations that are interesting, respectful and enriching for everyone.

Seamless Transitions and Polite Closures

It isn’t enough for a conversation to start strongly, it’s also necessary to maintain its flow and know when and how to transition from one topic to another. Being able to comfortably switch gears early on in a discussion once you realize that someone might not be comfortable talking about something anymore, is an important skill. It’s also important to know when and how to smoothly end a conversation in a polite manner which creates a lasting positive impression.

The Result: Conversational Confidence

Once you have mastered these skills, you will gain the confidence to start and sustain conversations in any situation, change the subject seamlessly and then close the conversation politely and kindly.
